About Obstetrics

We are seeing a greater number of informed couples reach out before pregnancy to optimise their health and find out more about improving their chances of conceiving and having a safe and healthy pregnancy. Ideally you should come to see us 3 months prior to trying to conceive.

  • General Advice: We will guide you and your partner on how to optimise your health and lifestyle and on the dos and don’ts whilst trying to conceive and during pregnancy.
  • Risk Assessment: We will screen you and your partner for personal and familial medical conditions that may impact on conception or on pregnancy.
  • Intervention: We will guide you and your partner on how to optimise your health and lifestyle and on the dos and don’ts whilst trying to conceive and during pregnancy.

What stages of care can I expect?

Antenatal Care

We will look after you throughout the course of your pregnancy with the goal of a safe delivery and healthy mother and child.

1st Trimester Care

The 1st trimester is both an exciting and crucial period when you first discover that you are pregnant. We advise you to first see us at around 5-6 weeks from your last menstrual period to assess the health of your pregnancy. At around 9-10 weeks, we will perform a “Dating Scan” to calculate an Estimated Due Date (EDD). Screening tests will be done to assess your wellbeing and we also offer optional tests for Down’s Syndrome and other genetic conditions in the fetus.

We will advise you on supplements to take and lifestyle modifications during this period. It is not uncommon for you to experience morning sickness or other pregnancy related symptoms and we will help you get through them.

2nd Trimester Care

During the 2nd trimester we will usually offer some vaccinations that are beneficial to you and your developing baby. We will also perform a detailed fetal screening scan at 20 weeks of gestation to assess for any fetal anomalies. Between 24-28 weeks of gestation, we will screen for gestational diabetes by performing an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

The late 2nd trimester is also the best time to capture a 3D Ultrasound image of baby – be sure to request for one!

3rd Trimester Care

The goal of care in the 3rd trimester is to ensure the fetus is growing well, screening you for any pregnancy- related complications and planning for delivery. We will discuss everything about labour to allow you to make an informed choice on your preferred mode of delivery, options of labour analgesia and expectations of the entire labour process. We also encourage couples to share your Birth Plan during this period.

Labour and Delivery

The mode of delivery may differ pending individual maternal and pregnancy factors. This may be a vaginal delivery, an assisted vaginal delivery or an elective or emergency caesarean section. Regardless of the mode of delivery, we will support you to achieve a safe delivery for mother and child.

Postnatal Care

The postnatal period is the first 6 weeks that follows delivery and can be an equally joyful and daunting period especially for first- time mothers. We will guide you on how to look after your post-delivery wounds and health, tips on breastfeeding and on neonatal care. Mood changes are not uncommon and many women require support during postnatal blues or even depression. We will often also discuss family planning and interim contraceptive measures.
